Hampton Roads has been my home since I was three years old. My parents moved here so that my father could pursue higher education at what was then a new school, CBN University. I am hopelessly in love with the ocean and cities and waterways and commerce that is unique to this area. I love the pace and the heart and the drive of our people, and most of all, I love the networking spirit that is our fuel. When you want to accomplish something in our community, there is always an expert to give you advice and the confidence you need to go for it – and even provide recognition for achievement and innovation. We just love to celebrate each other in Hampton Roads – even across the things that sometimes divide others.
As I shared my vision for a college that educates students through the strength of biblical leadership training and the network of experts found in Hampton Roads, a friend of mine reminded me of the prayer of Rev. Robert Hunt, part of crew that first landed in Cape Henry, who claimed, “from these very shores the Gospel shall go forth”. Hunt then asked the Lord to remind the generations of this covenant. This is why I chose the Cape Henry Lighthouse as our symbol. It is the reminder of the call of the next generation to understand the Bible, understand our times, and carry the Gospel forth.
At the same time, I’m reading the articles and watching the trends that show many students aren’t finishing college, young people are leaving the church in droves, and colleges aren’t preparing students for careers. I’m here to use my education, experience, and skill-sets, along with the strong resources of this community, to make a difference in these areas.
Seapointe College is built through the labor of experienced mentors and credentialed academic leaders. It is strengthened by the Hampton Roads community and the networking power of relationships forged over dozens of years.
Especially post-COVID, I have seen the importance of being student centered, focusing on mental health, and utilizing discipleship, mentorship and coaching in higher education efforts. There is nothing like our start to finish hand-in-hand mentorship relationships with our students to ensure they have all the tools they need to be successful in their calling. Not just a solid education, but discipleship to embed faith into the rest of their lives, networking skills, community relationships, high impact learning opportunities like internships to build their soft skills, and job placement with ongoing support.
Seapointe College focuses on undergraduate studies and offers a Bachelor of Ministry degree in Leadership, Community Care, and Creative Arts. Students will be able to minor in extracurriculars like dance, marketplace ministry, worship, discipleship, public service, and digital media.
I’d love to meet with you to talk more about our unique program and how you can study with us or partner with us in some other way. I know that as we incorporate academic excellence and the guiding principles of discipleship, diversity, resilience, followership, and community collaboration, our students will be equipped to impact this community in the way God called them.
All my best,
Dr. Sarah Hummel
President
