Marketplace Ministry: The Intersection of Faith and Business

Our faith is integral to all we are and all we do.

As Christians, our faith is integral to all we are and all we do. Christianity isn’t something to only be practiced on Sundays or within the walls of the church building. It is a way of life that should permeate all the spaces we occupy, including our work spaces. This is where the concept of marketplace ministry comes from.

Marketplace ministry, also called business as ministry, refers to the idea that our work can be a form of ministry. Our businesses can be a platform for sharing the Gospel and enacting the love of Jesus. Marketplace ministers understand that, ultimately, they are the product. They understand their business involves using their God-given talents, skills, abilities, and resources to bring the kingdom of heaven to Earth.

Work matters to God. Throughout the Bible, in both the Old Testament and the New, we see the overarching theme that work is to be valued. In fact, Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

The world has a way of “doing business,” but marketplace ministers understand their calling is always purpose over profit. Marketplace ministers use their resources to make a difference in the world and a difference in their customers and employees.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of marketplace ministry is the opportunity to share our faith with others. As business owners and professionals, we have unique opportunities to connect with people who may never darken the doors of a church. By living out our faith in the workplace, we can be a witness to the power, love, and goodness of God. This is business as ministry, and this is purposeful kingdom living.
