Upon completion of first semester ever, brand new college is making waves in the community

Seapointe College is proud to announce its acceptance of a Sentara Cares grant in the amount of $7,000 to be used toward their Beta Year Initiative, and in alignment with the Sentara Cares focus area of supporting “targeted training and development programs for higher-paying skilled careers.”

Seapointe College – a “college for the community” – just completed its first semester ever. The institution is seeking to prove a new model in higher education, prioritizing mentorship, anti-student debt, and personalization. The funds from Sentara will go directly to necessary scholarships for need-based students in the Spring 2024 semester.

“We plan to accomplish our mission to provide excellent academics, discipleship, and community collaboration to equip students to positively impact our community,” said Dr. Sarah Hummel, college founder and president. “Through growing our student body, our community impact reach will also expand.”

A Christian university, Seapointe College has five guiding principles in how it equips and prepares students for a lifetime of ministry: Discipleship, Followership, Diversity, Resilience, and Community. They utilize real-life experience (internships and community volunteerism) and mentorship throughout the personalized ministry plans for each student. In their inaugural semester, they had 10 students complete classes; in the Spring, they will have around 25 students enrolled.

“We’re so grateful for the support of Sentara and the difference they’ll make in providing a new kind of education to students of all backgrounds,” continued Dr. Hummel. “We can’t wait to see how these students will impact our community in the coming years!”
